Tried to emulate the strange proportions of Dreamworks' style here. Don't know how successful I was, but her curvy lady hips were a lot of fun to draw. :3
Roxanne Ritchi is from Megamind, by Dreamworks Entertainment. If you haven't seen it, RENT IT. I <3 this movie so much!
This year, Jon and I were joined by my best friend Magda, his best friend Al, our friends Tim (and his girlfriend Niven) and Oriana (and her girlfriend Rachel).

This year I shared my booth space with Magda (magdaguichard.com) and her leather masks. They were a huge hit and I'm very proud of her for taking a leap like that right into such a huge convention. :)

This year was especially emotional for me, because I got to meet the man who, at a young age, completely RUINED me for dragon art, Michael Whelan (michaelwhelan.com). Magda was awesome and took over the booth so I could attended his 'talk about whatever' panel. The only panel I was willing to ditch the booth for. Afterward I made an idiot of myself when I asked him to sign the cover of one of the Pern novels (Which I only bought/kept because his art was on the covers since I really didn't care for them otherwise) and the pen didn't work. CRAP! But he was really sweet about it. And I was grateful. I really wanted to tell him how much his work meant to me and how it was a catalyst for my early interest in Fantasy Art which steered me toward my current carrier path. But all I managed to squeak out was something along the lines of "Thank you, I love your work...." and ran off. Why does my brain lock up at this convention?! It's like I suffer from childhood-hero-overload. D:

For the rest of the Con I was kinda kicking myself, but it was easy to find distractions. To name a few, the Jonathan Coulton concert, the trip to the Georgia Aquarium, midnight Walmart adventures and tabletop gaming in the basement of the Hilton. No, I'm not kidding... they set the up the tabletop gaming room in the basement. In my over-exhausted state I found this thoroughly amusing.

All in all it was a memorable time and I even ended up coming home with a bunch of extra prints buttons and bookmarks! So, if you have the time, go check out the Shop! :3
Tiina Purinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07137885997783160067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3340273893301858081.post-1260184497670058712011-06-28T11:17:00.001-07:002011-09-16T10:53:00.820-07:00Print price increase.
I need to explain why I raised the prices in my print shop, because I feel like such a jerk for just doing it. And giving no explanation whatsoever has been eating away at me for over a month now.

I used to have a pretty good thing going when it came to making prints in house. I used my father’s professional Epson printer, and his stock of ink. All I had to pay for out of pocket were the protective bags/board backings, shipping envelopes and photo paper, since I preferred printing on matte and dad used glossy for his photography. And because that’s all I had to pay for I went for the top of the line. So when you factor in the time/labor and quality of the materials used, I wasn’t charging all that much. Living at home with my parents, rent-free, having all my meal provided for me and my dad’s help with the ink and printer allowed me to keep my prices low for years.

After dad passed away, his printer and all the boxes of ink/paper went into a storage unit. I had moved out of the house into my own place, so it was over a year before I was able to recover them. I was under the impression that I could resume printing again with all of the leftover materials for a good while. Unfortunately I found that a great deal of the paper from storage was Glossy, the ink was for a different printer… and the ink I could have used, had expired.

The printer is an old model as well and office supply stores no longer carry the ink. So unless I want to buy a new printer I must order the ink from the Epson website. On the bright side, buying one of each color for this beast qualifies me for free shipping. XD On the down side, no more free ride.

If I want to maintain high quality archival, color encapsulated, museum quality printing, I have to raise my prices a bit to compensate. Keep in mind, my prices were set back when I lived with my parents and they haven't been raised for almost 10 years. Since then, I've moved out, the economy crashed, and prices of everything have gone up. So while I'd like to keep things where they are, I'm forced to change with the circumstances. Thank you for your understanding.
Tiina Purinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07137885997783160067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3340273893301858081.post-83690551887048299172011-06-22T12:48:00.000-07:002011-06-28T11:34:05.114-07:00Start of Summer Sale!

START OF SUMMER SALE on Storenvy!

I think I've just about gotten my naga designs to a point I'm happy with enough to take on a more finished piece.
But that's not the main reason I'm hyped up about this issue. In it is a multi page promotion for James Gurney's new book, Color and Light: a Guide for the Realist Painter. I've been a sucker for James Gurney's oil work since I was a child and would recommend flipping through his book, Dinotopia, to anyone in need of inspiration. He makes fantasy worlds feel more real because of his classical approach to painting. You'll just have to check it out to see what I mean. :)
Tiina Purinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07137885997783160067noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3340273893301858081.post-72217191107371248452011-02-03T14:54:00.000-08:002011-02-08T10:09:39.936-08:00Copernicus
I recently flew up to Savannah, GA to visit my best friend for her birthday. And thanks to procrastination and World of Warcraft I stayed up all night packing before my flight and went sleep deprived the whole first day of visiting.

Amazingly enough, I discovered that the secret to productivity is simply "not to sleep." And here I thought artists lost sleep because they were too busy being creative. It's actually the other way around. Silly me. ^^

So here's one of the things I scribbled out in my sketch book while chilling in the costume department at SCAD.

This is a redesign of my character Copernicus. He was the second character I ever made and needed an overhaul from his early Pokemon-influenced design. His body structure is mostly based off of a goat.

Stage 84 was amazingly difficult to get to. But with the combined effort of my and Jon's phone-gps' we managed to triumph over the winding South Florida highways.

The Jackalope Show was intended for S. Florida artists in general, but from what I understand, the majority included Art Institute students, teachers and alumni. Not surprising, considering that the mascot of the Ai illustration department is the Jackalope. It was interesting to see all of the different ways the artists interpreted the theme. I know how I personally would have done an entire show about Jackalopes so it sort of opened my mind as to how other people see the subject matter. I picture the Jackalope as a real animal. It's own species with variation, bound by the laws of nature. But to my fellow artists it was a symbol of imagination, chaos, spirituality, humor, nonsense, sexuality and artistic expression. The art certainly wasn't lacking in variety. :)

I'm told that The Jackalope Show will remain up till near the end of December. All but a couple of the pieces are for sale. *hint hint* So, if you can find the time to go, it's worth the drive! ...just bring a GPS.
Tiina Purinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07137885997783160067noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3340273893301858081.post-68146965793365679592010-11-12T13:16:00.000-08:002011-02-08T10:14:03.748-08:00Prehistoric Jackalope: Part II

Here he is, all painted up and ready to go.
This little guy appears to be a smaller, stockier relative of the modern Pronghorn Jackalope of the North American plains. So far this is the best design I've come up with for a Prehistoric Jackalope without delving into silly stereotypical caveman imagery.
Maybe doing something silly wouldn't be such a bad idea. :p I like these antlers though.Tiina Purinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07137885997783160067noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3340273893301858081.post-46776308682566772002010-10-01T14:34:00.000-07:002010-10-01T14:35:09.452-07:00Jackalope Show coming up!

JACKALOPE SHOW @ Stage84

9118 W State Rd 84, Davie, FL

Working on a new piece for the up and coming Jackalope Show! My theme will be a 'Prehistoric Jackalope based on an extinct specie of antelope that is said to have resembled a rabbit.
I felt like talking about something that I find to be a crucial step in painting believable fantasy art. It's something that I know a lot of people (including myself) are guilty of skipping over.

Research.

It may seem silly to have to research for a fantasy painting. But keep in mind that even if the subject isn't real, it still has a whole lot of grounding in reality. You'd be amazed at all of the little details and nuances that can be over looked when working strictly from your imagination. Not only realistic lighting and believable anatomy, but details that make up the character itself. Especially when dealing with subject matter from folklore and mythologies. There is usually a lot of history to characters from stories. These histories are what give characters their personality and make up who they are. And these things that should be hinted at in the art representing them. I'll use my sketch of Melusine as an example of the method of research I prefer to go with:

- First I read up on everything I can on the subject matter. I check all sources of media, from the internet to books and movies. Be more careful with movies though, as they tend to stray from the source material a bit too far in order to hit a certain rating or appeal to a broader audience.

- Then, I sketch out my idea. The mermaid picture to the left was my first sketch after reading up on the story of Melsuine. I knew she was a mermaid in disguise who liked her privacy in the bath, but until I had gone back a re-read the story I had forgotten that she gave birth to mutant children. That ended up adding to the composition of the piece, with the portrait of her family.

- After having the general idea of what I want to paint, including everything I felt was important about this character, I go back to the research and do life drawings and sketches based on the features of the character or creature. I looked up what types of snakes were local to the country the story belonged to as reference for her tails. I even got in the bathtub and took a reference photo in the pose of the sketch in order to understand the proper anatomy and how lighting would play off the character. (The painting was never finished, but the research is all still there if I ever find the time to go back to it.)
Fantasy art is one of those subjects that gives us artists a lot of creative freedom. But keep in mind that the more realistic you can make your imaginary world, the easier it is for your viewers to find themselves able to believe it. :)
I like the idea of them having multi-toe hooves. It makes sense to me that they'd have at least four toes on their feet if they have five fingers on their hands. After all, a centaur isn't just a human glued to a decapitated horse at the waistline. It's a whole species.
The Spot-nosed F-monkey is one of the lesser known species of Flying Monkey. Though, due to their naturally calm demeanor, they are very hand friendly and easy to train. Their popularity in the pet trade should start to pick up with the help of good breeding programs making them more widely available across the country.Tiina Purinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07137885997783160067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3340273893301858081.post-18433451853198116122010-05-18T11:27:00.000-07:002010-10-01T12:47:25.796-07:00Velociraptor mongoliensis pairEven though it's been finished and on-line for a while now I figured I'd post the final version of my velociraptor painting so I could explain it a bit further. :)
Male (background) and female (foreground) variations of Velociraptor mongoliensis. *waves her "artistic license" around*

I have been wanting to paint this since I read an article on feathers having possibly evolved for display, before flight. I liked the idea of a more fluffy crest plumage, rather than scraggly red sticks poking out of the head like they are commonly shown as having on TV. The male raptor would be able to hide his bright feathers and only flash them as a territorial display towards other males or a pick-up line with the ladies. I'm embarrassingly behind on my dinosaur learnin', so please don't beat me if I missed something. I wouldn't mind pointers however, so I don't make the same mistakes twice.

Photo reference of raptor skeletons were heavily utilized. I don't think I'll use this painting technique again. It took WAY too long and didn't leave me much control over the lighting. I kept zooming out and face-palming far too often.Tiina Purinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07137885997783160067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3340273893301858081.post-10575525963318297852009-11-25T17:50:00.000-08:002010-10-01T13:42:53.385-07:00Meet KnukI wanted to make a gryphon character of my own to play with Sage's gryphon character Jhator on the Totemlands Forum.
He's still a sketch for now, but you get the idea. Fleshing him out will be the fun part. I will use reference for the actual character sheet so his wings actually look like hornbill wings and such. :p
I totally spammed photoshop filters to cover up the fact that the source photo was so low-res. I even threw in pre-made default photoshop shapes.
Anyone who's been around me in person for long enough knows that I get grouchy at the idea of someone throwing a colorpencil filter or something over a picture and calling it art. As if no one would notice. Pushing a button does not equal "instant art" in my opinion and if that's what you like to do, that's fine! Refusing filters is just a personal method I insist on for myself.I hate it if I can pick out exactly which filter was used. But on this project there was no time for my stuck up snobby nonsense. I had to make the thing printable at 300dpi and hope no one would notice the total sellout I felt had become.
